East Bengal defeated North East United 5-0 in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 match on Monday, December 4 at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.
This is the Red and Golds’ biggest win in the competition since entering the ISL in 2020. East Bengal completely dominated the visiting team to get all three points and move up two places to seventh in the latest league standings. They now have eight points from seven matches, two wins, two draws and three losses at home.
North East United finished sixth with nine points from their eight games with two wins, three draws and as many losses. Highlanders have played one game more than East Bengal.
FC Goa continued their strong form and are at the top of the league standings with 19 points from 7 matches and are the only unbeaten team in the competition. They are followed by Kerala Blasters, Mohun Bagan and Odisha FC who are keeping pressure on Manolo Marquez’s side. Mumbai City FC is ranked fifth.
Things remain grim for Chennaiyin FC, Bengaluru FC and Jamshedpur FC as they struggle to win matches. They are eighth, ninth and tenth in the league standings respectively.
Punjab FC and Hyderabad FC are the only two teams in the current season yet to win a game each. They are still unbeaten after playing eight matches each. Newly promoted Punjab FC have had a tough time and have just four points while Hyderabad FC have been plagued by problems of non-payment and tactical collapse and have just three points.
Five Star East Bengal made club history
In their biggest win in ISL history, Carles Cavadrat’s men looked completely out of sorts on the field against Northeastern United FC. Borja Herrera scored the first goal, before Clayton Silva made it 2-0 at half-time.
North East United FC looked completely clueless at the back, allowing East Bengal to dominate the second half and score three goals with ease. Nandakumar came off the bench to score twice, while Brazilian striker Silva added his second.
East Bengal FC will host Punjab FC on December 9, while North East United FC will host Hyderabad FC on the next day.
